In the past several decades, the world has gone through enormous changes on both a societal and an individual level. At the same time, there are some social rules that never change, regardless of the transformation in the external environment. One of them is courtesy. Even in this high-paced society, offensive and impolite behaviors are never acceptable.
To begin with, during class, there are no reasons for teachers to talk disrespectfully toward their students, even though they may make some obvious mistakes. Being friendly to students can bring people closer since this will form an emotional bond and trust between them. Students will feel that they are respected and more likely to focus on the lecture in this relaxed atmosphere. When the teacher is polite, students are more possibly to accept their teacher’s advice or even criticism. All of these contribute to students’ academic careers.
Moreover, office workers also should perform properly in their workplace. As a worker who is always busy entertaining clients or dealing with their superiors and colleagues, politeness is necessary and a precondition in order to make the work smooth. Especially in some service businesses, courtesy service is the bedrock on which a company stands. They may easily lose their public praise because of one server’s gaffe and will be buried among countless competing companies. Obviously, if a person wants to succeed in his/her career, politeness will never be outdated.
Admittedly, some believe that speaking frankly is acceptable when they are out for a good purpose. For example, suppose one professor makes a mistake when she is lecturing. In that case, a student can interrupt the lecture and point out that since it can serve as a reminder that teachers are not the perfect embodiment of knowledge and help the teacher realize their own weaknesses. Nevertheless, this interruption will destroy the atmosphere of the study and make others feel disrespected.
In a nutshell, politeness is a prerequisite for people to have a satisfying life.
