The reading passage and lecture both discuss hydrogen as an alternative power source for the internal-combustion engine in cars. The reading passage states that the best replacement is using fuel-cell engine which needs hydrogen in order to produce electricity. However, the lecturer rejects the claim made in the reading, casting doubt all the three presented advantages in the passage.
First, the passage asserts that hydrogen used in fuel-cell would not be finished easily. According to the reading, this is because internal-combustion engine works using different kinds of petroleum fuel such as gasoline or diesel fuel which soon we would run out of it, while hydrogen is a renewable power resource so its obtaining sources are various and easily available. Nevertheless, the lecture puts forward the counterargument that hydrogen is not easily accessible and usable because fuel cell needs pure liquid hydrogen which is an artificial material and it is hard to produce and store it, for example liquid hydrogen should be restored in -270C degree which need a powerful cooling system, hence hydrogen is not a practical substance.
Next, the passage mentions that using hydrogen could solve the pollution problem. As declared by the passage, carbon dioxide gas, emitted through burning oil, is harmful for the environment while fuel-cell engine only produce water as its byproduct. The lecture, however, states that hydrogen and fuel-cell is not a solution for pollution problem because producing pure liquid hydrogen needs a large amount of energy that producing it need power to be generated like by burning coal that would pollute the environment.
The passage finally argues that fuel engine is more economic compared to internal-combustion engine. As stated by the passage, less money is needed using a fuel-cell based vehicle because it uses half the energy that internal combustion-engine would use at the same distance. Rejecting this final point made in the reading, the lecture argues that fuel- cell engine is much more expensive because it is made of platinum, a rare and expensive metal, which is needed for hydrogen chemical reactions to produce electricity and so far , platinum could not be replaced by any other metal.
