Glass is a favored building material for modern architecture yet it is also very dangerous for wild birds Because they often cannot distinguish between glass and open air millions of birds are harmed every year when they try to fly through glass window

The reading and the lecture are both about how dangerous glass is for birds since they can not distinguish between glass and open air and collide with them while flying. While the author of the reading passage suggests three solutions to make glass more distinguishable for birds, the professor disputes all these solutions. He disagrees with the points made in the passage by providing three controversial reasons.

In the reading, the writer begins by saying that using one-way glass might be useful because birds cannot see through the glass, so they avoid hitting them. However, the professor disagrees with this idea. He asserts that this glass act like a mirror from the outside, and they are as ineffective as regular glass. The birds do not understand mirrors, and when the reflection of the sky or a tree appears in them, the birds think of them as a real sky or tree and end up striking with glass.

Furthermore, according to the text, if some colorful stripes or lines are painted on the glass, the birds recognize the glass as an obstacle and avoid hitting them. On the other hand, the lecturer states that this solution has some problems. First of all, birds conceive the gaps between the lines as open holes and collide with the glass while trying to fly through them. Secondly, if the lines are painted too close, the room becomes too dark, which is not unfavorable.

Finally, the author believes that because birds use Earth's magnetic field for navigation, creating a magnetic field around the glass makes it possible to deviate birds in a direction away from the glass. Not surprisingly, the professor refutes this assertion by contending that the birds only use magnetic navigation only for long trips, for example, for migrating between two countries. In short distances, like flying in the cities, they navigate by their eyes and the brightness of the light. So, this solution is useless.

To sum up, both the author and the lecturer hold conflicting views on preventing birds from colliding with glass.
