The author in the reading passage puts forward three solutions that may help protect rhinos from being hunted for horns. Despite agreeing with the idea of saving rhinos, the lecturer points out some flaws in the writer's proposals.
First, the professor casts doubt on the possibility that rhino horns can be directly removed by wildlife experts to make them less attractive to poachers. She mentions the process of finding rhinos in the wild, preparing them for surgeries and removing their horns can take a considerable amount of time and resources. However, even if dehorning is plausible, it will reduce rhinos' chance for survival in wild life since their horns are necessary in finding food and protecting their family. Therefore, this solution is impractical and only creates disadvantages for rhinos’ survival.
Another suggestion in the reading states that consumers can be educated about the untrue benefits of rhino horns to stop buying it. Again, the lecturer addresses this point when she says that it only works for people who haven't had a strong idea on rhino horns' health value. On the other hand, most consumers will be very unlikely to be affected by any scientific evidence as they already possess a strong ancient belief on health benefits brought by the horns, which has deeply rooted since thousands of years ago.
Finally, the lecture feels that it will be unpredictable to legalize government sales of rhino horn. If governments started to sell rhino horns, it would make more people think that buying this kind of product is acceptable, which would consequentially encourage the trade of rhino horn to flourish. The more people demand to purchase rhino horns, the larger the market will expand and their price will soon rocket. As a result, not only do the poachers not lose interest in hunting rhinos, but they will continue their illegal work for the large and lucrative market.
