The bar graphs elucidate the proportion of boys and girls who were successful in their high school competency exams in the period from 2010 to 2011, by subject.
The female students did best in computer science, with 56.3% girls passing the exams compared to 42.1% for male. Mathematics was performed at 48.4% by boys whereas 49.2% for female. Foreign languages subject, which includes of French, German and Spanish showed 47.4% passing rates for high school girls whereas the passing rate for boys were 0.6% lower than girls. Geography recorded at 20.1% for girls, who passed the competency exam as it is the lowest passing ratio compared to other subjects. The chemistry was boy’s weakest subject as it recorded at 14.1%.
The female students performed outstandingly well (30.2%) compared to boys (14.1%) in chemistry. While 30.4% boys passed geography, 20.1% girls passed geography. The remaining subjects (history and physics) had passing rates of 36.7% to 34.7% for physics and 25.6% to 22.9% for history for boys and girls, respectively.
As is evident from the graph, both genders did well on computer science, mathematics and foreign languages. Another striking feature is that generally, girls performed better than boys did over the period under study.
