In the reading passage, the writer talks about the altruism behaviour of the animals and people. The lecturer, however, disagrees with the author of the passage by giving contrasting viewpoints.
Firstly, the writer states about the altruism behaviour of people by giving the example of selfless helping their family members and strangers providing food and donating body parts. But, the speaker disagrees explaining that by doing such acts, the donater or the helper gets a lot of appreciation and their self worth also increases. Also she continues mentioning that such behaviour can't be purely altrustic as his/her value increases in the society.
Apart from that, the writer also claims that the beahvior of meerkat, a mammal, is also altruistic. However, the lecturer contends by saying that, according to recent research, the meerkat who plays role of sentinel eat before guarding and they donot do so without eating. Also, she continues refuting the writer claim that they risk their life for whole group by mentioning that guard meerkat is the safest one as it stands neer the burrow; and also they are the first one to enter their shelter after making warning sound while the other members are at risk.
In sum, both the writer and the speaker have contrasting point of views. Specifically, they have trouble in finding the common ground on this issue.
