The Phoenicians
Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they oppose specific points made in the reading passage.
The article and lecture both are about whether Phoenicians have circumnavigated Africa. The author presents some compelling reasons to show that it is not a likely event. However, the lecturer believes that they were capable of completing this journey.
First, the article notes that the ships built by the Phoenicians were not designed for long journeys such as the one in question. These wooden ships were small with limited space for cargo and other equipment that can be used for navigation. However, the lecturer argues that these ships were sturdy and well-equipped. He explains this by saying that the wooden holes in ships were reinforced with metal plates to make them durable. On top of that, the Phoenicians were excellent at repairing and maintaining the boats.
Secondly, the author mentions that Phoenicians would have encountered some geographical obstacles such as the Cape of good hope in Africa which would have made this journey impossible to complete with given resources. The author challenges this claim as well. He explains that the Phoenicians were skilled sailors and experts in using stars and other natural landmarks for directions. Moreover, the trading ports that they made must have helped them to know the local geography and pattern of current in a better way.
Lastly, the author notes that there are no firm records or artifacts that can clearly prove that the Phoenicians indeed completed the journey. However, the lecturer points to indirect historical evidence supporting the completion. He mentioned ancient Egyptian drawings showing ships of Phoenicians completing their journey in Africa, and ancient Greek historians that refer to Phoenicians as completing this voyage successfully.
