Some people believe that violence on television and in computer games has a damaging effect on society. Others deny that these have any significant influence on people's behavior.
What is your opinion?
There has been an ongoing debate regarding the influence of violence depicted in the media and its effect on society . However, I partially disagree with this notion and believe that the relationship between media violence and real-life violence is more complex than a simple cause-and-effect equation.
Firstly, it is important to acknowledge that media violence alone cannot be solely responsible for the rise in violent behaviour. There are various other factors, such as socio-economic conditions, mental health issues, and personal experiences that contribute to an individual's tendency towards violence. For instance, poverty and inequality can create an environment where aggression and conflict are more prevalent, regardless of media influences.Furthermore, empirical evidence suggests that the majority of people exposed to violence in the media do not imitate such behaviour. The passive nature of media consumption, where viewers are mere observers, does not inevitably translate into real-life violence .
Media violence can also have positive effects on society. To some extent, exposure to simulated violence in movies, television shows, or video games may serve as a cathartic outlet. It allows individuals to vent their stress or aggression vicariously, thereby reducing the possibility of venting their frustrations through actual violence . Real-life examples further demonstrate the complexity of the issue. Countries with strict censorship laws on violence in media, such as North Korea, do not necessarily have lower rates of violence. This indicates that curbing media violence does not automatically lead to a decrease in real-life violence. Therefore, this further questions the direct link between media violence and society's violent behaviour.
In conclusion, while it is undeniable that media violence can expose individuals to violent content, its influence on promoting real-life violence is limited. Factors such as individual predispositions, socio-economic conditions, and personal experiences play more significant roles in shaping one's tendency toward violence
