The chart below shows the average daily minimum and maximum levels of two air pollutants in four big cities in 2000. (Unit: microgram per m3
The bar charts below compare the average highest and lowest amount of SO2 and N2O in four big cities, which are Los Angeles, Calcutta, Beijing, Mexico in 2000.
Overall, it is apparent that Mexico was the most contaminated city among four cities examined, with the highest levels of SO2 and N2O. Conversely, the amount of SO2 in Los Angeles was negligible, whereas both Calcutta and Beijing registered lower levels of dinitrous oxide.
In 2000, Los Angeles witnessed the lowest daily amount of SO2 discharged among 4 cities, with the minimum average of 1 microgram per m3 and a maximum average ten times as much, at 10 micrograms per m3. Additionally, the level of N2O was much higher with the maximum daily average amount at 104 micrograms per m3, which far exceeded the minimum level of sulfur dioxide. A similar pattern of air pollutants emitted was observed in Mexico, with the figures for maximum and minimum dinitrous oxide dwarfing that of sulfur oxide, at 207 and 113 micrograms per m3 to 200 and 80, respectively.
Conversely, the amount of the highest and lowest N2O in Calcutta and Beijing was less than that of SO2. The levels of maximum and minimum SO2 in Beijing roughly surpassed that of N2O, at 130 and 25 micrograms per m3 to 54 and 14 micrograms per m3. The figures of Calcutta witnessed a relatively similar pattern with 59 to 52 micrograms per m3 for the maximum and 47 to 30 micrograms per m3 for the minimum.
