Education is the key to a nation's success as the students of today are the pioneers of the nation's future. Therefore, it is necessary for a nation to focus on the educational development of its students. A nation that invests in its education is fundamentally investing in its future. Therefore considering these points, a nation should allocate resources in properly planning an education policy which shapes the overall development of its students. Since the early stage of human development is childhood, therefore a special focus should be made on chalking out the education plan for its students upto high school. Therefore, we can see in countries like India, China, South Korea, the goverment carefully determines the curriculum of high school classes. Specifically in India, the recent National Education Policy(NEP) has laid out the foundational work for the holistic development of its school children beginning from the primary level to the higher secondary level.
The educational policy outling the same national curriculum for its high school students has many benefits. First of all, it ensures uniformity and ensures a base level of educational competency in high school students. Secondly it allows nations to ensure that the high school curriculum includes all the necessary subjects and the curriculum of each of these subjects is in tune with the latest development in the respective fields. Thirdly it allows to eliminate any regional or individualistic biases creeping into the student's formative years. In some countries, for example India, the high school curriculum also ensures to include the specific requirements in the fields of art, sports, physical exercises, military training, performing arts, vocational training and moral education to ensure not only the mental but also the physcial, spiritual and skill development of its students.
Now one may argue that such national uniform curriculum is quite rigid and does not leav room for innovative teaching. Well, if the national curriculum is designed meticulously then this cannot be farther from the truth as the same national curriculum, in turn, provides only a base level mandatory requirements to ensure atleast a holistic fundamental developement of its students and the teachers are always encouraged to expand the boundaries of their teachings as per the need and requirements of the students. Therefore, beyond a base level development there is always breathing room for teachers and students to go above and beyond and satidy their curiosity and carry out innovation. Another argument against national curriculum is that it does not cater to the regionalistic needs of the students. Well there are instances when national curriculum implementation commitees have taken that it account by offering regional subjects such as regional languages and regional literatures etc. One glowing example of this is the nation of India which is known for its 'Unity in Diversity' incorporating all such principles to ensure its students' holistic development.
I would like to conclude by saying that a national curriculum for its high school students ensures a base level holistic developmetn and if implemented correctly can account for the regional and individualistic needs. The need of the hour is for countries to meticulously carry out the planning and implementation.
