The chart provided provides data on the percentage of the population in four different countries living in urban areas from 1970 to 2020, with predictions from 2030 to 2040.
Overall, all countries saw significant increases in 2020 except the Philippines. Malaysia had the largest increase, while the Philippines had slight fluctuations. It is predicted that Malaysia will have the biggest leap between 2030 and 2040 compared to the remaining countries.
The Philippines had the highest figure in 1970, over 30%. This ratio increased steadily in 1990 before falling below 50% in 2010 and rising to about 46% in 2020. This ratio is predicted to increase to more than 50% by 2040. Malaysia started with 30% in 1970 and there was a jump to over 70% in 2020, which was an all-time high and will continue to increase over the next 20 years.
Indonesia and Thailand both started at below 20% and increased sharply to approximately 30% in 2000. Indonesia then moved to higher than 50% in 2020 and is forecast to continue increasing until 2040. Thailand remained stable from 1990 to 2020, above 30%, and is expected to increase to more than 50% by 2040.
