The bar charts compare three different uses of the Internet in Australian homes from 2010 to 2011
Overall, it is clear that the majority of users made use of the Internet for emailing, and it was the most popular purpose among age groups. Additionally, the proportion of those who used the Internet for social networking declined among the older age groups.
Emailing was an activity utilized by roughly 90% of all home Internet users. In contrast, just 60% of Australians carried out social networking at home, the figure for paying bills online or online banking was approximately 65%.
In terms of email, almost all home users in different age groups spent time on this activity, accounting for 80%. Social networking was more widespread in younger age groups, nearly 90% of all home users among the 15-24 age group utilized it, compared with 80% and 60% among the 25-34 and 35-44 age groups, respectively. The percentage of the 65 or over age group fell further to just over 20%. although only 40% of 15-24-year-olds used the Internet to pay bills online or for online banking, the proportion was higher among other age groups.
