The diagram below shows the life cycle of a salmon, from egg to adult fish.
The diagram illustrates stages of the salmon, from birth to mature fish.
It is clear that salmon spend time in three different areas during their life cycle, from river to estuary to ocean. There are five main stages in the life of a salmon, related to three rearing locations.
At the first stage of the cycle, adult salmon lay their eggs in areas of rivers. Their eggs are incubated and then young fish emerge. During the second stage, these young salmon are reared in rivers before swimming downstream to estuary, where these salmon continue to grow.
In river estuaries, salmon spend time to develop in size and then migrate to the ocean. At the fourth stage of the life cycle of the salmon, they move to rearing areas, where they grow and become fully grown adult. Finally, adult fish will travel back upstream to spawning areas of rivers and lay their eggs, the life cycle of a salmon begins anew.
