The graph below illustrated the estimated world illiteracy rates according to region and gender for the last year. Overall the highest percentage of illiteracy is held by the South Asian region with over 50% female who are unable to write and read, and a little over 30% for male population. Arab States and Sub-Saharan Africa come close to the second and third.
Developed countries is the most literate region according to the bar chart, with just less than 10% of their population who is illiterate. For developed countries and Latin American/Caribbean the proportion between male and female illiteracy isn't too visible. As the comparison to other region such as East Asia/Oceania where the illiteracy rates for male is below 10% meanwhile for female is at 20%.
To summarize, the disparity between male and female literacy tends to grow as the illiteracy rates get higher. The most contrast proportion of female and male illiteracy according to the graph is in East Asia/Oceania and Arab State came close to the second.
