Essay topics:

Some people believe that stricter punishments are the best way to reduce crime, while others argue that other measures are more effective. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Many individuals argue that harsher penalties are the most successful means of preventing people from criminal activities, whereas some counter that alternative solutions provide better outcomes. This essay discusses both perspectives and later presents my rationale for my support of the latter.

On the one hand, supporters of tougher sentences contend that it can effectively address criminal acts. This is because some potential offenders might be aware of the severity of the punishments, and therefore be discouraged from committing illegitimate activities. A perfect example of this is when the Chinese government raised the administrative penalties on traffic offenses, in which automobile drivers can face up to 5000 dollars for driving under substance, and 3000 dollars for disobedience of traffic light signals. After their introduction in 2023, occurrences of these traffic rule-violating acts dropped by 70% in the following year according to China’s National Statistics.

On the other hand, others are convinced that there are more optimal alternatives to deter crime. In particular, they reason that improved education systems are the key to achieving this goal. In fact, better education means everyone regardless of their economic status can receive education with minimal tuition fees. When individuals, especially those with economically disadvantaged backgrounds, can gain academic knowledge and training without financial burdens, they can be equipped with practical knowledge and necessary skill sets for the labor market. With stable employment, the economic pressure pushing them towards criminal acts would lessen.

In conclusion, both views have their own merits. However, I firmly believe in a robust learning system allowing people to secure employment since it can guarantee long-term crime prevention. Meanwhile, harsher sentencing only offers temporary crime reduction without tackling the root of the crime issue, which is unemployment from inadequate education.
