Some people think that sports play an important role in the development of society. Others think they are nothing more than a leisure activity. Discuss both views and give your opinion
A considerable number of individuals place great emphasis on sports in societal progress, while some are convinced that they are solely a source of entertainment. This essay discusses both perspectives before providing my opinion that sports transcend mere entertainment by delivering tangible economic and social benefits.
On the one hand, people attaching great importance to sports in society advancement believe that sporting activities could facilitate the development of the local economy. In particular, supporters reason that hosting international sport events could attract a large number of visitors, which could increase demand for accommodations, services, dining, and beverages. As a consequence, this would give rise to increased consumer spending, and allow local businesses to gain greater revenue.
On the other hand, opponents of sports argue that they completely are recreational pursuits. In fact, some people follow sports such as soccer, basketball, or tennis because they provide some sense of excitement and even escapism from their pressured and stressful lives. When watching sport matches, the audience exclusively focuses on the competition and excitingly advocates for their favorite teams and players, without concerning other personal issues, leading some to classifying them as purely recreational.
In my opinion, it is unreasonable to claim that sports are purely recreational as they provide both economic and social development. In addition to boosting the domestic economy, local authorities could grow their public funds from ticket sales and increased tax revenue from local businesses. Such financial resources then should be redirected towards other humanitarian disciplines. For example, governments can increasingly invest into building more hospitals, upgrading medical equipment, and subsidizing medical research, which can significantly improve treatment outcomes.
In conclusion, both views have merits. However, from my personal perspective, I firmly believe that sports exceed their recreation value since they offer significant economic impacts including fostering the local economy and raising more money for the investment into other fields that make immense social impacts such as healthcare.
