In one hand, the reading passage provides some reasons refuting the accuracy of the Chevalier de Seingalt's memoir. The listening passage, however, posits that the Chevalier’s memoir is reliable source of European history and casts doubt on the article’s theories by providing further explanations.
The reading passage states that The Chevalier distorted or invented many events. They provides three historical evidences. The first evidence is that the Chevalier had borrowed a lot of money from a Swiss merchant which proves that he would not be really rich. The second evidence is that he would not captured the conversations between Voltair, a very well-known writer, and him. Because, He had recorded them many years after the conversations occurred. The third evidence is that the Chevalier had a number of politically well-connected friends in Venice who could have offered the prisoners a bribe rather than escaping from the notorious prison in Venice, Italy.
In the listening passage, the professor rejects the critics’ claims. She states that it is true that the Chevaliers spent a lot of money on parties and gambling. He borrowed sums of money because he had sold his properties and it would have toke few days to receive his money. Therefore he had had to borrow money from a Swiss merchant. For the Voltair’s conversation issue, she posits that the Chevalier wrote the conversation notes after they had occurred at that night. The Chevalier had notes and journals which kept the contexts of conversation, so his memoir were based on accurate records. The last issue is about his escape from a notorious prison in Venice. It is true that the Chevalier had had potent Venetian friends, but the prisoners had hardly accepted bribe. Moreover, the government's reports clearly reflects his escape. The documents clearly had recorded that the prison's ceiling after the Chevalier escape had needed repair which demonstrates his escape method as he claimed.
