Some families cannot afford to educate their children because of poverty and ironically education is the panacea for elimination of poverty. Governments already have scholarship schemes for meritorious students belonging to economically weaker backgrounds which give them fee waivers to help them complete their education. Extending these policies to a 100% waiver might have some social and economic consequences though.
Having free education for the poor will encourage more students to pursue education. Many economically weak families forgo the idea of education for their children because of the financial burden it brings along and the cycle of poverty continues in the family due to lack of education. Such scheme will help break such cycles and help improve the literacy rates of states. One positive social consequence of this would be educated people from the poor communities will inspire other people to pursue education as well.
Social customs like honour killing and dowry are very prevalent among poor communities in India. Education among poor communities will help eliminate these social customs which in turn cripple them from progressing forward.
Providing free education to the poor might accompany some undesirable consequences as well. Parents who work hard for the education of their children might become reluctant to hard work after knowing that they won’t have to pay for their children’s education. Students coming from poor backgrounds might take education for granted because of the upliftment of economic burden from their shoulders. Such schemes will also make governments allocate greater funds in the education sector which will impact the overall budget allocation of the country – the consequences of which will eventually come down to the individual taxpayer.
In conclusion, free education will definitely help for the betterment of poor communities but we must be aware of the social and economic consequences that come along with such schemes as well.
