The lecture and passage both discuss the aim and meaning of the carved stones. The reading claims that the purposes of these artifacts are hunting and fighting, weighing and measuring, or social purpose. In contrast, the lecture refutes this and states that these three possibilities are not convincing. The professor provides three reasons to refute each author's reasons.
The reading and lecture mainly discuss weapon theory. The passage points out that these carved stones were mainly used for hunting and fighting. However, the professor indicates that other weapons that were used in Neolithic period have sign of wearing, but these carved stones are remained very well. She states that although some of these carved stones have crack on them, they preserved very well. As result, this carved stones were not used as weapons.
Furthermore, lecture and article considers weighting and measuring theory. The reading posits that these carved stones were employed to measure grain or other goods. On the other hand, the professor denies this point and explains that even though these carved stones have same size, they have different mass. As she says, these carved stones were made from different stone with different mass. The stone have same size, but different mass. Thus, these stone were not used for measuring purpose.
Last but not least, the social aim of these carved stones is another theory that is considered by professor and passage. The passage indicates that these stones shown the social class. In contrast, the professor rejected this by explaining that it is unlikely that these stones were used as social marker. Some of these stones are so intricate, while others are very simple. According to the professor, died people had high ranking, but there are not any stones in tomb and grave. As consequence, these stone were not used as social marker.
