Addressing the origin of a pattern of fine lines surrounding the skeletal bones of the found fossil of dinosaur called Sinosauropteryx, the passage discusses criticisms around the theory which attributes these lines to feathers. The lecturer, on the other hand, claims that those objections are not convincing since there are strong scientific evidences proving the fact that Sinosauropteryx had feathers. She responds to criticisms as you may find in the following paragraphs.
The lecturer refutes the point made by the passage that they are not the remained parts of an alive Sinosauropteryx, rather after they have buried in ash the process of decomposition have actually created lines. The fact that other animals' bodies buried in the same site have completely preserved results in this refutation. Due to this, the lecturer believes that there are unlikely to be fibers as a result of decomposition.
In addition, the reading indicates that even if we supposedly accept they are a part of dinosaurs' bodies, not enough evidence which can precisely attribute them to feathers not other bodies' parts have been found. Specifically, since some of the dinosaurs had frills. the probability of being frills not feathers exists as well. By contrast, since the chemical structure of feathers and frills are totally different, feathers contain a kind of protein called beta carbonate but frills have not, their nature could be easily proved by checking the remains' chemical constituents.
The question of the found remanents' function is the last criticism the passage has arisen. By considering the only conceivable functionalities of feathers which are a tool for fly and thermoregulation, the reading argues that the location of these lines along the backbones and tails which make them useless for those actions indicates they could not be feathers. In contrast, the lecturer asserts that the functions of feathers are not just those mentioned earlier. Because as we can observe in some types of birds, they can be a charming tool for attracting the suitable mate. This argument would be reinforced if we knew there are witnesses showing us the probable color of feathers was an appealing combination of orange and white.
