The reading and the lecture are both about the possibility of existence of feathers in a kind of dinosaur called Sinosauropteryx because of some patterns of fine lines around their skeletal bones. The author critiques this issue and provides three reasons. In contrast, the lecturer supports this claim and responds to every criticism mentioned in the article.
First, the speaker points out that after animals' death all skin will decompose during the time and if the mentioned lines had been formed after the dinosaur death, scientists would see the same lines as fibers in other animals, but they would not. In addition, they were preserved a long time after decomposition of body, while fibers could not be preserved for a while. Therefore, those remained lines on that dinosaur skeleton after death are not fibers but are functional structures line feathers. This statement argues the reading which mentioned that the fine lines on dead skeletons buried in volcanic ash are decomposing body remnants that turn into fibers and they do not represent the existence of feathers.
Second, the lecturer suggests that scientists analyzed those lines chemically and they figured out that they are chemically different from frills. As they stated the chemical structure of a feather contains protein like beta-carotin that is rarely exists in frills structure. Thus, the evidence showed the remains of such materials in those lines and supports that they are feathers, not frills. This claim challenged the reading which states that there are frills at the same parts of dinosaur bodies, not feathers.
Finally, the speaker claims that some birds like peacocks in which feather is not necessarily for flying, but for attracting another mate. Scientists premise that feather in that dinosaur had such function. After analyzing, also they found that their feather was colorful, so it brings about the idea that their feathers were used for those purposes not for flying or regulating their internal temperature as reading mentioned.
