In this set of materials, both the reading passage and the lecture deal with the pros and cons of the salvage logging, which is the practice of removing dead trees after disasters. Regarding this topic, the lecturer argues that at first glance, salvage logging has several positive influences on the environment, however it is not true. This contradicts the author’s assertion that there are several reasons to prove that salvage logging is advantageous.
First of all, according to the lecture, salvage logging is not helpful to growth of new trees because remained dead trees are able to make suitable conditions to regenerate new trees. This counters the author’s view point that with salvage logging, an area damaged by a devastating fire can play a role in making profitable condition to grow new trees.
Secondly, the lecturer goes on to say that it is unconvincing that salvage logging is profitable because it can remove habitats of insects that can be dangerous to people by providing insect infestation. This is because salvage logging destroy not only harmful insects’ habitats but also habitats of birds or insects, which are necessary to the healthy environment. This challenges the author’s claim that the use salvage logging can be productive to us because it can be remove a suitable habitat of harmful insects.
Lastly, the author assumes that salvage logging should be provide several economic benefits by offering useful wood from dead trees and creating more jobs. However, the lecturer rebuts the author’s assumption by giving several reasons that the economic benefits are not sufficiently large because it would need expensive cost to use and maintain several vehicles that are necessary. Also, the jobs created by salvage logging might increase temporary and are fitted by outsiders who are experts than local residents.
