In this set of materials, both the reading passage and the lecture deal the influence of the growth of the human population on the number of birds in the United States. Regarding this topic, the author asserts that the negative impacts on birds resulted from the continuously expanding agricultural activities by people is unavoidable. However, the lecturer contradicts the author’s point of view by saying that three reasons mentioned in the passage are unconvincing.
First of all, the lecture points out that even though we concede that the number of residents is growing, it does not necessarily mean that it play a role in the decreasing of birds. For instance, some people frequently complain that they have some trouble with too many birds of specific species in a city, which were increased after the human population were increased. Also, people cannot find some other specific birds in the city even though the species prey the large number of birds in the city. This counters the author’s view point that the increasing of human populations will cause to the reduced birds’ habitats.
Secondly, the author argues that the constantly growing human populations will lead to the enhancement of agriculture activities, which will collapse the bird habitats. From the lecture, however, the lecturer challenges this author’s assumption by describing an opposite opinion that in the United States, the used of lands for agriculture has reduced every year. Further, the growing of human populations will allow people to introduce more productive crops rather than expanding lands for agriculture.
Lastly, according to the lecture, there were the two trends of changes in agriculture, the first thing is the development of new less toxic chemical pesticides and the second thing is to invent new types of crops that can be able to resist against pests. These changes will prevent the number of birds from reducing by the chemical pesticides. The lecturer rebuts the author’s claim that the use of chemical pesticides in agriculture will continue to increase and it will be harmful to birds.
