The lecture challenged the standpoint and arguments expressed in the passage that Pterosaurs were not capable of powered flights.
First, the lecturer disagreed with what is indicated in the passage that ancient reptiles such as Pterosaurs were most likelyare cold-blooded animals and their slow metabolism will not be able to produce enough energy to support powered flights. Recent discovery of fossils, however, showed that Pterosaurs had dense hair-like furs covering their bodies, which is a common feature of warm-blooded animals. If that is the case, Pterosaurs would have a relatively high metabolism to provide enough energy for powered flight.
Second, the passage discussed that the large size of Pterosaurs would prevent them from powered flight, which was again opposed by the lecturer. The lecturer demonstrated suggested that Pterosaurs had uncommonly light body weight comparing to other animals of similar size. She elaborated her point explaining Pterosaurs had hallow and light bones instead of solid bones which made them light enough.
Third, taking off might indeed be a challenge for Pterosaurs, if they took off like birds, said the lecturer. However, unlike birds who use two legs walking and pushing themselves from the ground, Pterosaurs used all four of their limbs. This will allow Pterosaurs to run fast and jump high enough to launch themselves to the air and accomplish powered flight.
