In the reading, the author claims that planting trees which are genetically modified have lots of advantages by pointing out three reasons of support. However, finding all the ideas questionable and implausible, the lecturer totally repudiates the claim and presents some evidence to the contrary.
First, the author argues that genetically modified trees are more durable than nature trees. Conversely, the lecturer refutes this point by explaining that these modified trees have been designed uniformly and for a specific condition like a kind of climate or pest. So, they are not resistance to new pests or other poor climate conditions. While nature trees might survive in more variety climate conditions or pests even low numbers of them.
Second, the reading passage holds the view that planting genetically modified trees create more profits due to they not only are hardier but also provides more products. However, the speaker casts doubt on this point. She posits that companies can charge tree farmers more for their seeds. In addition, after growing the trees, when farmers want to collect seeds and plant new trees, they should pay the cost for every planting. As in turns out, cultivating genetically modified trees is more costly.
Finally, the reading states that by using genetically modified trees, native trees would not overexploit as woods. On the contrary, the professor disagrees with this reason. According to her, genetically modified trees grow very aggressively in their environment. Therefore, they surpass in the competition with native trees for natural resources like sunlight, water, soil nutrients. It is evident that eventually, they will remove the native species of the trees.
