Both author and lecturer offer two opposing views on the term of altruism. While the reading part lists some clues to support the idea that the altruism means sacrifices the own benefit due to the group advantages and exemplify this issue in both animals and people, the professor counters these specific points and presents some reasons to call into the question for the information given in the passage.
First of all, the passage mentions to the meerkat which puts his survival in danger till protect its other team member. However, the instructor challenges the validity of this belief for the sake of well-examined study conducted on the meerkat's life. As she asserts, the meerkat skips just after its alarm. Therefore, it is not is peril as assumed in the article. As the meerkat lives in the burrows after its signal, it runs away by the burrows, and it will be in safe. On the other hand, the other team members will be in danger for the sake of the signal indication by the predator.
Second, the article posits that the meerkat does not eat before its total group members have eaten the food; as a result, it is a symbol of the altruism. On the contrary, the lecturer dismisses the accuracy of this assertion. Based on the exact and precise examination has been done the meerkat's eating habit, the meerkat eats before the standing guard. Consequently, there is no sense of the unselfishness as mentioned in the text.
Finally, the text asserts that the feeling of the sacrifices exists among the people since they donate their body organs or share their food with the strangers. On the other sites, the professor casts doubt on the accuracy of this belief. As she declares, there is a list of nonmaterial prizes such as the public approval and public appreciation or the sense of the self-worth which persuade the individual to sacrifice his organ or food. Thus, there is a motivation which obliges to people to do that action.
