The author says that the modern people are wasting time over other things and not reading intellectual novel and plays and poems etc and he provides three justifications for his belief. However, the lecturer refutes his notion for the following reasons.
First, the author tells that the reduction in interest of the readers in books like literature is sad as these books are helpful in expanding imagination and comprehension of language. But the speaker contraindicates this point by mentioning that there are other stuff to read such as science books, history and political science which are equally intelligent and provides intellectual stimulation as literature is. Hence, the reader is not missing anything by not reading literature as suggested by the author.
Second, the passage states that the other sources of entertainment like TV, music video have declined the standard of culture. Conversely, the professor opposes this point and explains that today some of the TV programs are good and does not lower the standard of culture. In addition to it, some of the music videos today are brilliant and thus listener prefers these sources of entertainment. On the other hand, there are few novels that are very intricate to understand even for the readers in the olden time and so the people do not like to read them.
