The article states that Rembrandt, the most famous of the 17th century dutch painters, didn't actually paint Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that though the arguments stated in the reading is true, the protrait is actually found to be painted by Rembrandt after thorough examination and refutes each points of the reading.
First, the reading claims that the dressing of the woman in the portrait is inconsistent as the woman is wearing luxurious fur collar which doesn't match with the white linen cap. The professor refutes the claim by telling the fur collar was added later to the painting. She avers that X-ray showed that it was not a part of the original painting. It was added about 100 years after by someone who tried to increase the value of the painting by giving a more formal look.
Second, the passage posits that the face of the woman was illuminated by light reflected onto it from below but below the face is only dark fur collar. This error is not typical of Rembrandt, a master of painting light and shadow. However, the professor explains that this supposed error is not present when the fur collar is removed. Under the fur collar which was added later on, is a light colored clothing which reflected light and illuminated the face. It is very realistic and certainly consistent with the work of Rembrandt.
Finally, the reading says that the painting was done on a panel made of several pieces of wood glued together and no painting known to be by Rembrandt uses this kind. But the professor counters this by explaining that when the fur collar was added, wood panels were also added to make the painting look like more valuable. The original painting was done on single wood panel. Also, the wood of the original painting was from the same tree of another painting by Rembrandt.
For these reasons the painting is indeed one of Rembrandt's work.
