Romans had attacked on Greek port city and Greeks defended themselves with an ingenious weapon called a "burning mirror". In the reading, historians does not believe on the usage of the burning mirror and shows some doubts on the capability and feasibility of this weapon. Whereas, lecture gives positive explanations to reject the views mentioned in the reading.
Firstly, reading states that Greeks were not technically good and it was difficult for them to make several meter wide mirror in precise parabolic shape. Contrary to this opinion, lecture states that Greeks were not too bad in making burning mirror. It is not required to have a single sheet of copper to make weapon. They could have used dozens of sheets of copper and fixed themselves in such a way to get a parabolic shape.
Secondly, reading states that reflection from the mirror takes time to fire and it has been proved in a experiment with stable wood piece. While, lecture agreed with the results of the experiment but claimed that boats were not made of wood only. They put some sticky substance like pitch to make boat water proof and pitch catches fire so quickly that it can burn in a second and it can spread quickly to burn whole body.
Thirdly, paragraph claims that Greeks had flaming arrows which works similar to burner mirror. What is the special use of burning mirror if they had flaming arrows to fire. Contrary to this opinion, lecture states that Romans were familiar with flaming arrows and they could counter for this. Burning mirror was new ingenious weapon which ignited fire from an unobserved place. This was a surprise for the enemies and more effective to burn ships.
