In the given set of material, the passage states that authenticity of the silver coin found in the site of Maine in US is questioned by some of the archeologists. They believe that its fake and provide three reasons to do so. However, the speaker in the follow up material cast doubts on those points by providing evidences.
First, the author mentions that the site where coin is found is located very far from other sites documenting the presence of Norse in North America. Conversely, the professor refutes this point and explains that along with coin many other objects have been found. Also, North Americans used to travel far of places and collect things from there of their choice. Hence, it is possible for them to get this coin.
]
Second, the passage suggests that no other coins have been found at the Canadian site that was explored by the Norse. The lecturer rebuts this statement and justifies that Norse didn’t have permanent settlement in North America and so when they came from Europe they must have carried all the coins with them and while going back from America they took them all.
Third, the reading says that there was no value of these coins in North America and Norse knew this fact. Thus, there was no point in bringing them there. In contrast, the lecturer states that although they could not be used as money but they were found beautiful piece of art by the Americans. They used to use them in making necklaces and in other jewellery pieces. Thus, as long as they were valuable for Americans, Norse could use them for trading.
