The reading passage mainly presents the statement that the problem of invasion of zebra mussel can not be solved and it is a threat to freshwater fish population in North America, while the lecture cast a negative attitude toward this statement.
First off, the reading says that the invasion of zebra mussel can not be stopped according to the past history. However, the professor refutes that it is because the people in the past were lack of knowledge that the salt water can kill the zebra mussels. There is an effective way to deal with it. Once they know that ocean water can kill the mussels, emptying the fresh water and refilling it with ocean water which contains a lot of salt, it will help killing the mussels to keep them from invading.
What's more, the passage contends that mussels can dominate a new habitats once they are carries toward a new land. Yet, the speaker contradicts that the domination happens only in the beginning. If there is no food in the habitat, some birds will change their habitats to find new food sources like mussels and eat a lot of them. . As a result, mussels can not dominate the habitat at all.
At last, the article claims that the fish population will decline due to the emergence of zebra mussels. But, the lecturer argues that the decrease happens only among those fish eat plankton. The fact is, the other fish like those live in the bottom, mussels may have positive impact on them though supplying them nutrient actually.
With all the dimensions mentioned above incorporated, the professor strongly disagree what the reading material presents.
