The diagrams below show the development of the horse over a period of 40 million years.
The diagram illustrates the evolution of the horse from Eohippus to a modern horse with a particular stress on a foot structure, in 40 million years period.
As is observed from the picture, the first horse is known as an Eohippus, had a small body and snout. It had five tiny toes that were separate from each other. Then, it transformed into an ancestor of a today's horse - Mesohippus. After 10 million years, the body of the horse had enlarged along with a tail, a snout as well as the middle toe.
Again after an interval of 15 years, the Mesohippus evolved into Merichippus. The thighs in the latter had developed with a mane on a neck. In addition, middle toe became even larger while the two two basidigital toes reduced. Over time, Merichippus developed into a well-known Modern horse which had reduced metacarpals and a developed hoof along with a long tail and various joints.
All in all, a horse went through a plenty of changes before the contemporary horse.
