The article states that US companies will not be interested in getting eco certification for their product and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor states that there good reasons that encourage US wood companies to seek eco certification and he refutes each of the author’s reasons.
First, the reading claims that US consumers would not value or pay particular attention to the eco certification label because they are exposed to so many advertisements. The professor refutes this point by explaining that consumers do not treat all advertisement the same way. US consumers can easily distinguish between advertisement that made by a company for its product and advertisement that made by independent agency. Since the eco certified wood would be advertised by independent agency, it would gain consumers confident easily. He concludes that consumers usually in favor of getting wood products that eco certified.
Second, the article posits that eco certified wood will be more expensive than uncertified wood because of the additional cost of getting certification. The professor, on the hand, states that economics studies have shown that consumers would only depend on price if the margin of price among products are highly expensive. But, if the difference between product is less than 5 % , as in the case of eco certified wood difference, consumers are likely to choose products depending on other factors. So, consumers adopt new ideas of preserving and protect environment, eco certified wood would be their first choice to purchase.
Third, the reading avers that pursuing certification would be sense for American companies if they marketed their product overseas. The professor opposes this point by saying that of course US companies should pay attention because of the foreign competitions inside the Unites States markets. Since US companies neglect the influence of eco certified wood on their markets, foreign companies will invade the wood business and compete them on selling certified wood which make US companies lose a lot of profits.
