The graph below gives information from a 2008 report about consumption of energy in the USA since 1980 with projections until 2030.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The graph demonstrates the six different fuel types consumed by Americans from 1980 to 2008, and the prediction until 2030.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that there will be an upward trend in the consumption of energy in the USA during the examined period. The fossil fuels (petrol and oil, coal, natural gas) are the main sources of energy.
In 1980, the Americans used up a total of approximately 82 quadrillion units of energy. This number rose up gradually over the years. It reached over 100 in 2008, which is 1,2 times higher than 18 years ago. It is predicted that the energy consumption in the USA will stand at 120q units by the year of 2030.
The fossil fuels have been and are projected to continue being the dominant types of consumed energy. 35q units of petrol and oil were used in 1980, followed by natural gas and coal at 20 and 15 respectively. The alternative fuels such as nuclear, solar/wind and hydropower trailed far behind with less than 5q units of each were consumed. In 2030, the consumption of petrol and oil will reach a new height of almost 50q units which will be approximately 3 times more than the combined amount of nuclear, solar/wind and hydropower energy.
