In this set of materials, the reading passage states that genetic modified trees have a lot of advantages over unmodified ones. However, the lecturer finds all the benefits skeptical and explains that their disadvantages and costs are more and provides some evidence to refute mentioned benefits.
First of all, the author of the passage claims that modified trees are more resistant to difficult situations and can survive longer than unmodified counterparts. In contrast, the lecturer argues that modified trees are just resistant to some specific conditions and cannot tolerate new environments. For example, if we plant just genetically uniform trees, after the invasion of a new pest or change of the climate, all the trees would wipe out. Hence, this will damage to their population dramatically.
Furthermore, it is mentioned in the reading passage that modified trees support economic benefits and their products can satisfy farmers. On the contrary, the lecturer contends that there is hidden cost that the writer did not consider it. Farmers have to pay three times greater price for modified seed and according to the law every time they plant a new tree, they have to pay for it. So, it is not frugal for people to grow them.
Finally, the reading passage asserts that modified trees save the endangered native trees. Conversely, the lecturer claims that they grow more aggressive because of consuming most water and nutrition in the soil. In fact, they do not allow wild trees to use resources and consequently they cut out nature trees.
