The reading and the lecture are both about the legitimacy of Rembrants famous painting "Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet". Moreover, the reading states that there are some inconsistencies, which are not typical for Rembrants art. However, the lecturer cast doubts on the claims made in the article. She states that a panel of experts approved that the drawing was made by Rembrandt.
First, the author points out that the woman dress in the painting shows a white line cap, which only was worn by servants, but on the other side, the woman has also a luxurious fur collar, which only the rich could afford. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She claims that, couple years later, the fur colour was painted over the original art from another artist to sell the art for a higher price.
Second, the author states that the light and shadow in this Rembrandt artwork does not match together. Further, he illustrates that the face in the painting is highlighted from a dark fur collar, which is highly unlikely to be so. The point is challenged by the lecturer. She argues, that Rembrandt considered the play of light and shadow in his original painting. However, the overpainting of another artist destroyed this.
Finally, the author illustrates that the artwork was painted on a panel made of several pieces, which Rembrandt has never done before. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the overpainting of the second artist was responsible for this believe, because he wanted to increase the size of the drawing for his own drawings. She claims that the original painting of Rembrandt was drawn on single piece of wood panels.
