This essay presents an opportunity to discuss ways by which the Chaco Canyon buildings were used for .This essay comprises of various points agreed and disagreed upon. I will further elaborate on the points presented in the lecture and the passage.
The speaker does not sound convinced and furnishes various reasons to support his theory. The reasons given by the speaker in the lecture can be traced in following fashion: First, the speaker states that from the outside the Chaco houses gave a sense of the Native American style of settlement. However, The interior of the house was the root reason that casts doubts because there were hardly any fireplaces .Fireplaces were necessary for residential processes. The largest room had ten fireplaces only. Lack of fireplaces in a house believed to be used for human settlement was unacceptable. Second, the speaker strongly believes that the houses were not used as storage houses . The speaker states that there was unsupported evidence . Furthermore , hardly any traces of maize containers were discovered . Moreover , no traces of maize grain were found on the floor . Third, the speaker discards the idea of the house being ceremonial centers - Pueblo Alto. The speaker states that the excavation findings not only comprises of ceremonial objects but a lot of other material like building material – sand , stone and construction tools . the speaker believes that the houses were used for garbage disposal. Furthermore , The speaker states that the broken pots could be trash too .
The views of the author of the passage differ in comparison to the views of the speaker .The author presents several points which contradict the speaker’s belief which are as follows : Firstly ,Chaco structures were purely residential each housing hundred’s of people each. These Chaco Canyon houses resembled to large apartment buildings at Taos, New Mexico. The speaker opposes the author by stating that the houses lacked the required amount of fireplaces to harbor hundreds of people . Hence the houses were not purely domestic . Secondly, The author believes that the houses served to be a maize store house . Furthermore , the houses had appropriate conditions to store food for long periods and provided with long –lasting food supply. However, the speaker contradicts the author by throwing a light on the excavation findings. The speaker states that no evidence was found to show that the house was used as a maize storehouse. Lastly , the author statuses that these structures were used as ceremonial centers – Pueblo Alto . Excavations revealed deposits that contained broken pots used in ceremonies . Yet , the speaker refutes by stating that excavations findings revealed that the house was probably used to store trash.
The essay above clearly correlates the agreements and disagreements the ways by which the Chaco Canyon buildings were used for.
