The artcile states that humpack whales use the stars for navigation and provides three reason of supports. Conversely, the professor states that evidences that suggested humpack whales navigated by the stars are not convincing and he refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading avers that humpack whales are very intelligent to use the stars for navigation. The professor opposes this point. He says that there is no real connection by being intelligent and use the stars for navigation. He provides an example of ducks to illustrates this. Ducks cognitive ability are very limited and they use the stars for navigation. And so this ability is much more an instinct born with animals and it does not show any real connection between being smart animals and use the stars for navigation.
Second, the article claims that since humpack whales migrate in straight lines for long distances, they orient by external objects, such as the stars. On the other hand, the professor disagrees with this point by saying there is different explanation for maintaining movement in straight direction. Humpack whales sensitive to external forces, such as earth magnetic field. They have a bio magnitude structure inside their brains and thus they are sensitive to earth magnetic field rather than the stars to directed them through their migration.
Third, the reading posits that humpack whales use spy-hopping to observe the stars while migrated. The professor refutes this point by saying spy hopping has nothing to do with navigation. He explains that even though its rare, there is other animals that use spy-hopping for looking for animals and not for navigation. For example, sharks are not migrated in origin and they exhibit spy-hopping to look for other animals. Also, humpack whales use spy-hopping during the day; this means there is no stars in the sky. As a result, the professor concludes that the theory of humpack whales use floating to looking for the stars is purely speculation.
