The chart below shows global sales of the top five mobile phone brands between 2009 and 2013.
The bar chart illustrates changes in worldwide sales of the five largest mobile phone manufacturers from 2009 to 2013.
Evidently, over the 4-year period, Samsung supplanted Nokia to become the leading company in the global mobile phone market. During the same period, Apple enjoyed a surge in its handset sales, climbing rapidly to the third place.
Dominating the mobile phone world in 2009 with roughly 440 million units sold, Nokia suffered a dramatic plunge in sales during the following four years. The number of products sold by the Finnish company shrank to only 250 million in 2013, while the sales of Samsung, in stark contrast, increased markedly. With sales reaching 450 million handsets, the Korean manufacturer officially overtook Nokia as the best-selling brand in 2013.
It is also noteworthy that in the meantime, the gaps between Apple and the above-mentioned tech giants were rapidly narrowed since Apple’s sales showed an impressive growth. Starting from only 20 million devices sold in 2009 – the lowest number among the five companies, the sales of Apple skyrocketed to 150 millions, surpassing both LG and ZTE in 2013. In contrast, LG and ZTE encountered an unsuccessful period when their sales either dropped considerably or remained stagnant.
