The lecture and the reading both discuss the migration of humpback whales. The reading states that the humpbacks navigate using stars to help them to migrate. The lecture refutes this by saying that the idea of using stars to navigate is fascinating, however, the theories provided by the reading are not convincing.
First of all, the reading claims that the humpbacks are very intelligent, which provides them the opportunity to use the stars to navigate on there way of migration. However, the lecture argues that intelligent is not the main reason that they can navigate by using stars. Moreover the professor says that ducks also migrate but they are not as intelligent as humpbacks.
In addition, the reading makes the argument that humpback usually migrate in straight lines, which means that they use outside sign to navigate. In case of humpback they use the stars as a sign to help them migrate. That is why they move in straight lines. The lecture counters this point by stating that the reason that humpback migrate in straight is that they use the magnetic field to migrate. According to the professor, the humpbacks have a biomagnified in their brains that leads them to move in straight line according to the magnetic field.
Lastly, the reading argues that humpbacks have unusual behavior called spy hoping. They usually come out of the water to look at the stars, which means that they use the stars as a mean to navigate during migration. The lecture refutes this point by stating that spy hopping is a poor speculation. Furthermore, the professor says that sharks doing the spy hopping behavior even they are not migrate. According to the professor, sharks using spy hopping to hunt other animals and they usually do that behavior in the morning while there are no stars.
