Both the reading and lecture are about Torreya taxifoha which is a type of evergreen tree and native of Florida. Unfortunately, it has started to decline from 1950. The reading provides three approaches for improving this condition and then supports them. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article and find all arguments unconvincing.
First of all, the author of reading declares that reestablishing this species in the environment that it could have survived for thousands years. This ambient has a lot of suitable microclimates which help Torreya taxifoha to stay cool. This point is challenged by the professor. She points out that such a great environment was influenced by large cities. The lecturer elaborates on this by mentioning that nowadays, global warming have negative impacts on these trees and since wetlands have drained, there is no original microclimate in northern part of Florida.
Secondly, the reading suggests that with relocating Torreya taxifoha to the furthest areas can be noticed as assisted migration and it is one of the most effective ways for rescuing of Torreya taxifoha species; in the contrast, the professor tenders an example from this procedure to stress some its disadvantages. The lecture contends, a few years ago, people attempted to relocate Locus tree species then extremist spreading of these trees could kill other types of plants; as a result, this approach has unexpected consequences.
Finally, the reading passage states that researchers can maintain Torreya taxifoha trees in a research center. With this method they will not only be able to assist Torreya taxifoha for surviving, but also they can pursue their researches on this type of tree. This argument is rebutted by the professor again. She claims that Torreya species requires large places to reproduce seeds which are resistance genetically; however, since the research centers does not support large rooms; subsequently, Torreya taxifoha trees will not be rigid and resistance in front of disease and their population will continue to its reduction.
