The topic is about whether the eco-certificate will work for the American wood companies or not. The reading passage lists three reasons to indicate why this certificate won't prevail in the USA. However, the lecture holds an opinion that is contradictory to the reading passage.
First, the reading passage states that American consumers won't value or trust the attractive labels in the advertisement because they have seen too many. The lecture reputes this idea by explaining that American consumers don't treat all the advertisements the same. They know the difference between the claims in the advertisement made by companies themselves and the claims made by independent organizations. American consumers feel more confidents when the product is granted by independent agency. So this eco-certification will lead reaction that is favorable to the companies with it.
Second, according to the reading passage, certificated wood will be more expensive than those that are uncertificated. The trend that price-driven American consumers will prefer cheaper uncertificated wood will cause American companies keep a low price. the lecture argues that price is the determine factor alone only when one product is much higher or lower than others. When there is slight difference of the price, like the woods, people will take other factors into account. Moreover, American people will value the wood with the certificate to protect the environment.
Third, the reading passage considers it is unnecessary for the American companies to keep up with the international developments as their business target domestic consumers mainly. In the lecture, the professor says that it's the foreign competition that American companies should worry. If American companies fail to catch the consumers wishing to buy eco-friendly woods, a huge amount of international companies will cater to these consumers and stole the consumers from domestic companies.
