The lecture and the reading both discuss the decline in the yellow cedar. The reading states that that there are three hypotheses to entitle the causes of decline. The lecture refutes each of the reading hypotheses. The professor explains that none of the hypothesis is adequate to now the real reason of the decline.
First of all, the reading argues that the decline of the yellow cedar is due to insect parasites that attack the tree and eat the wood. The lecture refutes this point by saying that healthy yellow cedars are resistance to the beetles. According to the professor, the healthy cedars contain powerful chemicals that are toxic to the insect. Furthermore, the insect only attack the tree that is already damage. The insect is not the fundamental cause of the decline.
In addition, the reading argues that the brown bears are another cause that leads to decline the yellow cedar. The bears claw the trees to eat the sugar content; consequently the bears weaken the trees. However the lecture disagrees, it claims that. The bears are not the cause for overall decline of the yellow cedar. the professor explain that the decline occur across the coast, the bears are not living near the island, even thought there is decline in the cedar trees in the island, that illustrate that the decline occur with or without the occur of the bears.
Lastly, the reading states that changing in the temperature is the third cause that leads to the decline of the yellow cedar. The climate changes affect the root system of the yellow cedar. The lecture opposes this point, illustrating that frosting damage is not the main cause for the decline of the yellow cedar. The professor explains that in the lower elevation where the climate is warm there are also decline in the cedar trees. More trees die in the lower elevation than the higher elevation. Climate change is not what killing the trees.
