In this set of materials, the reading passage claims that the subject of a portrait which owned by Austen family is Jane Austen and provides three reasons of support. However, the lecturer finds all the idea doubtful and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First of all, the author of passage states that Austin family confirm the assumption that the girl in the portrait is Jane Austen. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that the portrait published in1882 and Jane Austen died about 70 years before the date, thus Austen family has never seen her directly and they could not identify the portrait as Jane portrait.
Furthermore, it is mentioned in the article that the portrait is analogous to the Cassandra's sketch so we can say that the portrait is belong to Jane. On the contrary, the professor draws attention to the fact that because Austen extended family was very large and Jane had a lot of cousins and descendants who can be resemble to Jane, for example, Mery and Comelian who are her distanced niece were look likes her. So, resemblances between the portrait and the sketch is not convincing reasons.
Finally the reading passage asserts that the portrait's style is related to Ozias Humphrey and he was active at the time in which Jane was teenager so he painted a portrait of Jane. In contrast, the speaker disproves the idea due to the fact that the portrait was painted on the canvas which was sold in London when Jane Austen was 27 years old, because the stamp in the back of canvas indicates that it was sold by William Leg and he started to sold canvas in London when Jane was young, but the girl in the portrait is teenager so Jan Austen was not subjected for the painting.
