The article states that the United state's school organization borrowed from European System separates students into grades in a chronological manner. Student at six starts the formal schooling and are said to be in first grade. Then according to grades, the students are divided into three groups; Primary Education(1-5/6), Intermediate grades or junior high school(from 6/7 to next 3 years) and last secondary school(9/10). However, the professor explains that this organization of grades has many loop holes and undermine the capability of the individual student.
First, the paragraph states that student at the age of six is considered to be in their first grade. The professor refutes to this point by stating that some children are ready for their first grade on their 4th or 5th birthday and some aren't. He supports his point by saying that the teen age children have differences in them in terms of maturity, physically and socially. Still, they are grouped under the same grades which hamper the development of their individual personality.
Secondly, the article implies that all the student in similar grade are evaluated on a similar basis. However, the professor states that some students are faster in learning grasp the contents quickly and then needs to wait for other students who have a slower rate, who needs to repeat already learned content to keep up with the class. With this point, the professor makes the point that individual differences are never addressed in this school system.
Thirdly the professor states that some students need to repeat the complete year which in turn lead to higher drop out rate. This in all the professor refutes to the point made in the article.
