In term of whether the environmental pollution or predators are the main cause of decline the number of sea otter. The reading and lecture both contradictory to each other.
First, the reading states that many sea otters had been killed dut to the chemical pollution. On the other hand, the professor refutes this notion by saying that there were not dead sea otter washed out on the beach. So, it was a weak hypothessis. Moreover, the preditor's hypothesis was more conviencing becasue in this case otter could not be washed out.
Second, the article avers that they found other otter specious like seals and sea lions decreased. So, pollutions was considered the casuse of the sea otter dead. However, the professor questions this idea by explaining that wheels disappered dut to the hunting. So, Orcaes started to eat the small fish like seals and sea lions. As a result, their ratio in the sea started to decline.
Finally, contrary to the belief in the reading passage that the polluition was the cause of unequall amount of sea otter declined. the professor argues this idea by pointing out that predition not the pollution was the cause behind that. the location accessability for orca or not was the cause of that. The area that orca can access easy the number of the sea otter decrease but, there were places that orca could not reach. So, the number of otter did not decline.
