The underwater noises which called “quackers” are strange and people make several theories to explain them. On the contrary, the speaker points that all the theories have arguments.
To begin with, the claim that quackers are the calls of ocra whales seems plausible, however, it is highly unlikely. The professor asserts that ocra whales live in the surface water not the deep ocean where the submarines remain. Also, even if there are orca whales, submarines could detect nearby whales by sonar. So orca whales cannot be the sources of the quackers.
Then, according to the author, quackers are caused by giant squid that is also again by the speaker. She tells us that if this theory is true, we could always hear the strange sound because giant squids are still alive. In fact, quackers which started in the 1960s disappeared after 1980s. Thus it is not a reasonable theory.
In addition, the speaker also disapproves the third theory that they come from military technology like other country’s submarines. No submarines have the ability to change the directions so quickly. She also illustrates that till now, we have not own the technology to build a submarine with both fast speed and silent engines.
