According to the passage between 1960s and 1980s Russian submarines had detected sounds that is now called "quackers." Both the reading and the listening discuss theories regarded this phenomenon.
First theory that the writer suggests is that orca whales are the source of this sound. Also it is noted in the reading that this sound is similar with the sound of orca whales that the researchers have studied before. Contrarily, the professor argues that the whales usually are near the surface while submarines are in deep of ocean, which makes it unlikely that the whales were the source of the sound. She also points out that the whales did not detected by submarines.
Second, the author suggests that another theory is that a giant squid - a creater living deep in sea- was responsible for the sound. They had not been detected by submarines because they do not have skeleton. Also the writer notes that they have complex brains. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that the sound was reported between 1960s and 1980s which arise the question that why submarines did not report this phenomenon after 1980s while the squids continued to exist.
Last theory suggested by the article is a militry equipment had made the sound and due to sophisticated technology it had not been detected by Russians. The lecture maintains that the source of the sound was seem to change direction rapidly. She also points out no engine noise was heard. Even today there is no technology that can damp the sound of the engines completely.
Overall, the professor refutes all three theories that discussed in teh passgage.
