Although the passage introduces three main hypotheses to support the fact that birds population has been decreased in the United State recently and this trend will be continued in the future, the professor finds all the reasons dubious and brings up three conspicuous points to refute them all.
Considering the first point, the reading material argues that human population expansion causes vanishing the bird’s habitat such as wetlands and forests and convert them into the places for human settlements. However, the speaker finds it unconvincing and asserts that urban growth has provided copious habitats for birds. Although urban growth has declined some birds’ population, it has increased some other type of birds throughout the cities. For example, the number of pigeons and seagulls has increased while the other types has declined.
Furthermore, the reading passage claims that with increase in human population, the demands for more food will enhance and the agricultural activities will be increased which result in more wild lands will become agricultural lands and the birds’ habitant will be destroyed. In contrast, the lecturer states that the United States has recently used fewer lands to grow new crops since they do not need more lands. This means that less lands in use, less habitat disappear.
Eventually the author holds the view that usage of toxic pesticides and chemical materials to prevent harmful insects and species for crops will augment according to the human population expansion which will result in water pollution. It also causes birds stop breeding and extinct. Whereas the speaker contends that the effect of pesticides will be less than before due to the fact it has changed a lot. Not only are new pesticides less toxic but also new pest resistant crop are genetically improved which birds can use them without any harm.
